The GitHub Profile API returns a single GitHub user or organization profile as structured JSON. Pass the handle in the username parameter (a pasted profile URL or an @handle is normalized automatically). The response includes the profile identity and sidebar details (name, bio, company, location, website, status, social accounts, highlights, and repository, star, project and package counts), the pinned cards as pinned_repositories (or, when the profile has no pins, GitHub's fallback as popular_repositories), organizations, GitHub Sponsors in both directions (sponsors and sponsoring), achievement badges, the profile README as readme with its text, html markup and link, and the contributions calendar with its activity overview and per-type activity breakdown. The calendar covers the last 12 months, or a whole calendar year when you pass year.

Header follower and following counts are rendered compact by GitHub (for example 25.2k) and are therefore approximate. The repos, starred_count and sponsoring_count values are exact.

Both user and organization accounts are supported. Organizations return the shared identity and detail fields - including bio, location, email, twitter_username, social_accounts and sponsoring_count - with is_organization: true and the sponsors / sponsoring rows when GitHub shows them, together with the sections GitHub renders only on an organization page: the overview repositories list with exact counts and licenses, top_languages, topics, members_count, the people member preview, and verified_domains for GitHub-verified organizations. The user-only sections (company, following, starred_count, status, highlights, organizations, achievements and contributions) are omitted. The contributions section can also be absent for user accounts with no visible activity, such as deleted-user placeholders.

Inside contributions, the calendar and total cover the last year, while activity is the timeline GitHub renders under the calendar for the current month so far - its window is returned as activity_from and activity_to. It holds blocks in GitHub's order, typed commits, repositories, pull_requests, pull_request_reviews, issues, discussions, answered_discussions or the featured highlight, and one type can fill several blocks, such as two highlights. Each block carries GitHub's summary line and its rows, one per repository in a commits block and one per contribution in the others. Contributions GitHub keeps private are not listed there. They are counted for the same window in private_contributions.

Pass tab=repositories for the account's full repository list, 30 rows per page with page, for users and organizations (organizations add exact issue and pull request counts), or tab=stars for a user's starred_repositories and star_lists, 30 rows per page with the next_page_token from pagination. These tabs return profile, the tab's list and pagination only.

    The GitHub username (login) to look up, e.g. dhh. User and organization handles are both accepted. An @handle or a profile URL of the form https://github.com/dhh is accepted and normalized to the login. Other URL shapes such as github.com/orgs/rails are not. The handle must be 1 to 39 letters, digits, or hyphens (older accounts can start or end with a hyphen) and must not be one of GitHub's reserved top-level routes such as about or settings. Anything else returns a 400.

Contributions

    Calendar year of contributions to return, from 1970 to the current year, e.g. 2024. The contributions calendar then covers that whole year, and its activity timeline shows the December of that year, or the current month so far for the current year. Without it the calendar covers the last 12 months. Organizations have no contribution calendar. Supported with the overview tab only.
